Transformative Excavations: Project on Reconstructing Post-war Benghazi
Tajarrod is excited to announce the start and Open Call for the ambitious project Transformatice Excavations: Project on Reconstructing Post-war Benghazi.
Overview:
In this project, we will consider the destruction of Benghazi's historic downtown as an opportunity to reinvent what the resilient Libyan city can be, beyond traditional tendencies that attempt to replicate the past or Western modernist approaches that fail to address the city's historical and contemporary context. We will design multi-scale proposals—urban, architectural, and artistic—as a kind of "excavation" that critically reflects the city's history, cultures, and identities, while simultaneously proposing new solutions to practical problems related to infrastructure, public space, and the city's economy. At the end of the project, 1:1 scale models of the artistic proposals will be constructed as urban furniture to be displayed exclusively at the project's exhibition in the downtown area of Benghazi.

Background:
Downtown historic Benghazi, Libya is a layered city containing a diverse and problematic range of Greek, Roman, Italian colonial, Ottoman Imperial, and Arab cultural and architectural heritage. Since, there are no official national archives, the only historic traces the city once possessed was its physical self. However, after the 2014 civil war damage, Benghazi has been going under a demolishing process threatening to erase an area measuring approximately more than 3,000,000 sqf of built heritage for reconstruction. This vanishing colonial and traumatic history has not been documented, archived or processed. The thesis of this project comes here as a critical response to this random and unjust governmental project while proposing a counter-reconstruction project that takes into consideration the city’s critical past.
This project examines how we can develop a scheme of reconstruction that is decolonial and non-nostalgic or historicist to the original condition of the destroyed city, while also not alienating its history, culture, and tradition. The ongoing discussion is divided into two camps, a dominant one that suggests a radical erasure of that traumatic history in favor of a new modern and economically productive center, and another advocates for reconstructing the historical version of the city, maintaining Benghazi’s overlapping Libyan and colonial architectural identities. This thesis however, tackles reconstruction to address three issues: cultural amnesia, colonial identity, and urban hegemony. The first manifests in the collective disengagement from the critical history of the site, the second lies in the social identification with the Ottoman and modernist Italian architectural style. And the last is the Libyan government’s approach of reconstruction through a top-down masterplan.
The scope of this project considers the architectural and ideological history of modern downtown Benghazi, from the Ottoman and Italian colonial eras beginning form 1835 to the present. This project will utilize several qualitative methods that include: interviews as oral archives, field notes, field visual documentation, counter-mapping and site observation. This approach is being used for the lack of sufficient quantitative data about the city and will be conducted in Libya soon.
Transformatice Excavations aims to develop an inventory of tactical multi-scalar urban structures that gradually develop and expand through community participation and collective place making to contribute to reconstructing the city as whole with strategic phasing. Additionally, as the city after the 2014 civil war has already lost its various layers of undocumented built heritage that was Colonial Ottoman, Italian, and Libyan, this project aspires to act as an urban and infrastructural archive, or what we would call a “tactical archeology” through its experiential and symbolic qualities.
Benghazi is the Laboratory:
This project acts as an experimental laboratory to invent a radical vision for reviving downtown Benghazi. Transformatice Excavations brings together several contradictions, frictions but also commonalities regarding how the erased historic town should be rebuilt. This proposal operates intensively on programmatic levels to generate not just a symbolic city, but a new productive city emerging from the old one that was dependent on the country’s rentier economy. The focus of this lab project is to conceive downtown Benghazi as demolished archive that could be interrogated and reconstructed with developing multi-scalar hybrids, architectural, urban and landscape. It deals with the demolished landscape as a thickened archival ground to be excavated through design. It will develop a strategic scheme as well as focused areas to be enriched with tactical urban and architectural interventions.

Site:
Tajarrod is looking for enthusiast young architects who:

Had just graduated with a 1-2 years of experience or
are in their last year of studies of architecture, landscape or urban design.

Has an efficient level of English. Competency is a
plus.

Excellent knowledge in 3D Rhinos, AutoCad, and
Photoshop/ illustrator. Lumion, Twinmotion, or any V-ray rendering software is a
plus.
-
Able to attend In-person fulltime presence with flexibility
to work from home.

Should be between 21 and 35 years old.
Roles and responsibilities:
Architect - full/part time:
Designing and finalizing architectural drawings + 3D digital models
Commitment: 3/5 days a week, 3/6 hours a day.
Assistant architect/ visualizer part-time:
Designing Isometrics, 3D rendering, collage + poster and presentation design.
Commitment: 3 days a week, 3 hours a day.
Volunteers:
Contributing in organizing exhibitions and activities.
Salaries and rewards:
The official salaries are between 2000 and 3000 LYD.
Additionally, in case of wining the competition, each participant will receive an extra bonus of 5000 LYD + international exposure through publication.

نحن سعداء بإطلاق مشروع (حفـــريات متحولة - مشروع عن إعادة إعمار بنغازي)
سنعمل في هذا المشروع بإعتبارالدمار الذي حل بالمنطقة التاريخية (وسط البلاد) في بنغازي كفرصة لإعادة إبتكارما يمكن للمدينة الليبية العصيّة ان تكون عليه ما وراء النزعات التقليدية التي تحاول إستنساخ الماضي او التوجهات الحداثية الغربية التي لا تعبرعن السياق التاريخي والمعاصر للمدينة. سنقوم بتصميم مقترحات نظرية متعددة الاحجام حضرية و معمارية وفنية كنوع من "الحفريات" التي تعكس تاريخ وثقافات وهويات المدينة بشكل نقدي وفي نفس الوقت تقترح حلول جديدة لمشاكل عملية تخص البنية التحتية والفضاء العام واقتصاد المدينة. في نهاية المشروع سيتم بناء نماذج 1:1 من المقترحات الفنية كأثاث حضري ليعرض حصرياً في معرض المشروع في منطقة وسط البلاد، بنغازي

تعدّ وسط البلاد بمدينة بنغازي التاريخية في ليبيا منطقة متعددة الطبقات، تتكون من مجموعةً متنوعةً وإشكالية من التراث الثقافي والمعماري اليوناني والروماني والإيطالي الاستعماري والعثماني الامبريالي والعربي. ونظرًا لعدم وجود أراشيف وطنية رسمية، لم يبقَ للمدينة من آثار تاريخية سوى ركامها. ومع ذلك، بعد الأضرار التي لحقت بها جراء الحرب الأهلية عام ٢٠١٤، خضعت بنغازي لعملية هدم تهدف الى محو مساحةٍ تُقدّر بأكثر من ثلاثة ملايين قدم مربع من هذا الركام التاريخي من اجل إعادة بناء المدينة
يبحث هذا المشروع في كيفية تطوير مخطط إعادة إعمارٍ مفكفك لتاريخ المدينة الاستعماري وغير خاضع للنوستالجيا التي تستنسخ الحالة الأصلية للمدينة المدمرة، هذا مع إعتبار تاريخها وثقافاتها وهوياتها المتعددة. ينقسم النقاش الدائر إلى معسكرين: معسكر يقترح محوًا جذريًا لذلك التاريخ المؤلم لصالح تصميم حديث، ومعسكر آخر يدعو إلى إعادة بناء النسخة التاريخية للمدينة، مع الحفاظ على هويات بنغازي المعمارية الليبية والاستعمارية المتداخلة. مع ذلك، تتناول هذه الأطروحة إعادة الإعمار لمعالجة ثلاث قضايا: فقدان الذاكرة الثقافية والهوية الاستعمارية والهيمنة الحضرية والريعية الاقتصادية
